Boyle Memorial Award Mission Statement

Richard “Dick” Boyle was a remarkable educator whose love of mathematics, creativity in the classroom, and compassion for his students enabled him to successfully teach students of all ages and abilities. Throughout his thirty-four years of service, at both Sousa Junior High and Schreiber High School, Mr. Boyle’s complete dedication to his profession and to his students was inspirational. His untimely passing has motivated many of his former students and colleagues to honor his memory by establishing this award, meant to inspire current and future generations of Port Washington students.

Mr. Boyle’s accomplishments transcended the classroom. He was, amongst other things, a past President of the Kiwanis Club and a Chairman of the museum in the upstate NY town to which he retired, as well as an outstanding photographer, an avid athlete, and a talented trumpeter. Never one to proclaim his many gifts, he was in fact one of the most unassuming individuals anyone of us has ever met. In short, he was a true Renaissance man, one who not only taught us about math but also about how to live our lives.

As a number of us have said, “every student should have a teacher like Mr. Boyle.” Applying this concept to the full range of opportunities open to our town’s high school graduates, this award will honor Dick’s legacy by encouraging the pursuit of excellence regardless of what profession is eventually chosen. It will be awarded each year to a graduating Schreiber High School senior who has consistently displayed excellence in mathematics and the creative arts, as well as for spreading a love of education and giving to others, either through tutoring, mentoring, or simply through leading by example. Preference will be given to students who have also engaged in a variety of extracurricular activities, been involved in worthy causes, or otherwise exemplified the spirit of Mr. Boyle.

Note: The Schreiber Math and Guidance Departments will both be involved in the selection process, with a member of the Port Washington Retired Educator’s Association to have oversight responsibilities. Candidates shall not be required to apply.
